You're absolutely right about Palmeiro, who was born in Cuba, tdow.

I did not know that factoid about Winfield. I guess considering he never took the field for Cleveland after the trade that season, due to the strike (though he was re-signed by the Tribe as a FA before the 1995 season), even lunch at Burger King would be overpaying. From the look of Winfield's 1995 line with Cleveland (.191/.285/.287, 2 HR, 4 RBI), he probably should have just hung up the spikes and gone to Cooperstown a year earlier.

That would be Rafael Palmeiro.

Did you know that in the strike shortened 1994 season, Dave Winfield was traded to Cleveland for a "player to be named later". The Indians never ponied up the player, instead the executives of both teams went to dinner to resolve the issue with the Indians' ownership picking up the tab. I hope it was a 5 star restaurant!

Just an added note... I debated about whether or not to include the biographical fact about Carew being the first foreign born player to reach 3,000 hits because it's only true if you consider Roberto Clemente's place of birth, Puerto Rico, NOT to be "foreign". I know some of us have had that discussion before.

Just to test whether anyone actually reads these comments, there's since been one more foreign born player to join Carew (and arguably Clemente) in the 3,000 hit club. Can you name him?

That would be Pedro Ramos, who beat Whitey Ford and threw a complete game shutout at the Yankees. Sorry I missed the question previously, amanda! Here's the link to the boxscore over at baseball-reference.com. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA196104110.shtml

Hey! I posted this question in the comments section on another post and asked you on Twitter, but I'll try again here. Do you know who pitched the very first Twins game?
