I'm with JC on this one. By putting the two statues near each other, it just revives the incident (which BTW I didn't even know about, being new to Twins Territory, but DO know about now). Not sure the Twins have actually overcome that legacy of racism . . . at least now I understand the basis for some of the talk I heard over the past couple of years . . .

I'll be listening to this one with my eyes closed, so not chatting, but I mainly wanted to point out that apparently Babs whined so loudly about the bullpen that the Twins got her two new pitchers within a week . . . way to go Babs! :)

Like I said, I TOTALLY understand WHY there could be issues. But I guess I just know enough of the story to know that it shouldn't still be treated as if it was an issue (IMO) because that just furthers the problem rather than leave it settled as the two men did between themselves.

You can't ever improve your standing in a situation if you can't let yourself move out of it.. *shrug* To presume that Carew needed to approve it kind of assumes that they think he didn't really mean it when he said that he no longer had issues with Griffith. I don' tknow.

All of which is why I think they handled it far better than I would have I guess. *laugh*

See, this just goes to show that you and I don't ALWAYS think alike, Babs. The very first thing I thought of when I read that the Griffith statue was going up near the Carew gate was, "Wow, that's ironic and not very appropriate at all."

I realize that by the time Carew went in to the HoF, the two men were back on good terms, but Griffith's famous racist joke in Waseca that came in the middle of contract negotiations that eventually resulted in Carew becoming an Angel will forever be etched in my mind as emblematic of "the beginning of the end" of my youthful enthusiasm for the Twins.

I'm glad the Twins showed the sensitivity of checking with Carew concerning his feelings on the location of the Griffith statue.
