Thanks, all, for the comments.

beth, I'm not sure how rational these views were, but I appreciate the compliment. It's actually more fun being irrational sometimes (or all the time, apparently, if you happen to work in the Yankees' front office).

glad I could make you smile, millie... that's what I was going for! :)

AW, I completely agree that the Twins "do it right" by keeping their negotiations more private (even if we all WANT more information, at the time). The Yankees have always operated differently, especially when George was running things. I've never understood the benefit of that. I remember when we were all going through the Santana mess, it seemed like there was a new rumor coming out of the Yankee office every couple of days. That had to drive the Twins office crazy. I realize the NY media is much more competitive than what the Twins deal with in Minnesota. But obviously, that organization believes in using the media to aid negotiations. As millie indicated, at least that provides the rest of us with some amusement.

Finally, it has been suggested via Twitter that I stole the title of this post from Karlee Kanz's great post over at Twinkie Town several weeks ago, "The Curious Case of Justin Morneau". (read it here: http://www.twinkietown.com/2010/10/4/1730781/the-curious-case-of-justin-morneau)

This is not true... at least not consciously. I'm sure I read her post and I'm not saying I WOULDN'T steal from her... or anyone. I have no qualms about stealing good material. It's just that I didn't steal from her this time. I know, because I stole the title from "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", which was a movie I briefly considered ordering on Netflix the night before I wrote this. Not to worry, though, Karlee... I'm sure I'll get around to stealing from you eventually! :)

Good read, JC. I also "like" Jeter as much as a Twins fan can, and I agree with your comments concerning the extent to which the Yankees are going to overpay for his services.
I think it's interesting to compare last year's Mauer negotiations, and this year's Jeter negotiations, and in the end I much prefer how the Twins did things. I am sure that numbers were bantered back and forth for months, and that maybe things did get personal and Mauer maybe even thought about testing the free agent market. But I'm glad that neither Mauer nor the organization make any of that public knowledge. Simply stated, even if it is interesting information, we don't need to know every detail. I have lost a little respect for Jeter, and even more respect for the Yankees, because they have allowed private negotiations to be played out in public. So let Jeter get $23 million a year for 4 years out of the Yankees and thin out that pocketbook a little.

Yes of course, the Yankees will grossly overpay the declining Jeter. This continuing saga has been a source of quiet amusement for me every time I read about it, but your post has me laughing out loud.... "He’ll be his own statue"....Ha! I love it!

Thanks, JC, for the rational view of things. I passionate hate Derek Jeter for representing the Yankees and being talked about way too often, but I do respect that for the most part, he's seemingly lead a good life. (Think about it: he's as famous as A-Rod without nearly the scandals. You know if there were some, they'd be reported on as much as A-Rod's story has been...not to say there hasn't been rumors here and there, but no relative drama.)

I hope the Twins make the offer. I think having him on the team might draw more people (although the Twins don't need it this year. If they were still in the Dome, then, yeah, do it in a heartbeat. If nothing else, you'd get mourning Yankees fans at more games, cheering for Jeter--who would be a Twin, making them slightly less obnoxious. Maybe), and I fully agree the dunk tank idea would bring in some dough. Especially when the Yankees are in town.
