		<description><![CDATA[Even if you&#039;re holding a fire sale, you don&#039;t trade the best OF on the team, who is signed for the next 4 years for just $23.25 million. And you certainly don&#039;t trade him for a weak shortstop (his 0.6 fWAR rates 21st among qualifying SS this season) and a relief pitcher (even if he is very good and has 3 years of arbitration eligibility ahead). You look for buyers who might be interested in your veterans with expiring contracts, or those who might be getting too expensive next year. You look to dump the guys who won&#039;t be part of your longterm plan because you&#039;ve decided that they&#039;re dead weight.

You might shop Thome, Kubel, Cuddyer, or Young. You might shop Pavano, Liriano, and even Nathan. Some of them might bring back legitimately good young talent. But I don&#039;t know why Smith would be shopping Span around, unless he&#039;s convinced that Span is at his peak value now. In that case, I&#039;d hope to see him aim higher than what the Nats supposedly have been  offering.]]></description>
