I think it is quite possible… perhaps even probable… that the Twins would have a discussion with the affected player(s) before making a deal, unless a team was offering a totally obscene deal in return.

By the way… is Cuddyer a “10 and 5″ player yet? I seem to recall a discussion about him getting close to having right of refusal on that basis, but I don’t know where he stands.

Totally agree with other comments–Thome deserves any shot at a title he can get as he enters the twilight of his career. I almost wonder if the Twins would ask him (or Kubel, Cuddyer and Nathan for that matter) how close to a contention a team needs to be before they pull the trigger…or would that be collusion?

Thome would look good back in a Cleveland uniform, if that ends up working out. They have some nice throwback jerseys that their players actually deserve to wear!
But you’re right, JC, it’s all speculation until something actually happens.

Thank you for offering a much more level-headed view of things. I think Rosen last night best demonstrated the problem with the current fan view when he did a whole report on Thome’s trip through Waivers. Beginning the report with “It could mean something or it could mean nothing….”

Players get put on waivers all the time. And it feels like with the way things have gone this year people just want to panic because they’ve got nothing better to do at this point.

But I’m in agreement that Thome (moreso than anybody on the Twins roster) deserves a shot NOW at the postseason, with whatever team can get him there. The guy’s a class act who’s lack of a ring is probably the only sticking point for the pundits who don’t want to acknowledge his obvious HoF credentials.

His quest for 600 was fun to watch, but beyond that I’d hate to see him become a sideshow for the rest of the Twins season. He really only has two “goals” that he can realistically reach, and that’s passing Sammy Sosa and gaining a ring.

The former isn’t worth watching enough to deprive him of the latter.
