It's not that I expect the people running the team to be "gods" or in any way perfect at decision-making. But I also don't want them to think they ARE "gods" that already know all they need to know about how best to run a baseball team... that they can't possibly benefit from learning more. Again, as I stated in the post, it's really a feeling you get that they take pride in being ignorant about modern statistical analysis that I find so frustrating.

Hey, this blog is easily in my top 20 already, Jim Crikket, and I've only been reading for a week or two.

On their podcast, Gleeman and Bonnes pretty regularly discuss how they also cannot predict the Twins' moves. In contrast, they had a Rays analyst on last week who said there is someone out there who can guess practically every move the Rays FO makes.

Do the Twins even have a Way?

Iā€™ve long felt the Twins should at least employ analysts familiar with what the modern philosophies are, even if they donā€™t necessarily buy in to those philosophies themselves. It would be a wise start.

As for the Patton stuff, I was going to go with Sun Tzu references, but thought more people would have seen ā€œPattonā€ than read Art of War.

Maybe not.

"itā€™s frustrating that this organization seems to almost take pride in their unwillingness to use modern analysis to their benefit."

Another one bites the dust ;)

Good to see you joining the 'dark side'. But what is all that Patton stuff?

That was a great post JC. Great insight as usual. I however perfer to take a more simplistic approach. The Twins now spend more time deciding how much to charge for beer, bratwurst, and cheap souvineers made in China than they do on deciding who to put on the field. Baseball is now a game of generating dollars. Really no different than running a Target Department Store. Belive me, the Twins are holding meetings trying to sell a 16 ounce beer for $10.00.
The Mauer contract has mortgaged the Twins for another 8 years. A career year forward for Mauer is .320BA 9HR 75 RBI. They need to sell more beer.
A side note: We have decided NOT to renew our partial season ticket package. If we want to go to a game we will buy the $8.00 tickets on the street.

I agree wholeheartedly that there is a "head in the sand" issue in the Twins organization. I am focusing on the plague of injuries the Twins had this year -- I'm not even going to delve into the other issues mentioned here. They're obviously a problem, but a problem that wouldn't be as much of an easy fix as hiring a new training staff would be.

With the current trainers' approach to things like elbow injuries (wait a year, realize that there's a real problem, then send the pitcher to surgery and lose them for at least another season) and the number of simple injuries that other teams don't seem to suffer nearly as much of as the Twins do, I am rather surprised that we continue to keep the same staff. It's not like this is the first bad injury year we've suffered in recent history. If a player is missing months for a sprain or weeks because of a pulled hamstring, there is a problem. Sports teams are generally known for their ability to rehab a player quickly and well, but our guys have extended stays on the bench from the smallest tweaks and pulls. I can't believe that any other team out there would find this acceptable considering the amount of money they pump into their training facilities and staff.

As long as the Twins continue operating the way they have been, I have to say that no, I don't trust them. I hope they do well, but I can't trust that they will.
