I expect Span to regress toward his 2010-11 slashlines. But even at those levels, he was worth 2.2 fWAR in 70 games last year and 2.7 fWAR in 2010. If he keeps that up, he is well worth the money he has coming to him. However, he is one of TR's most valuable trading chips, and TR has to honestly tell himself, does he expect the club to be good again by 2014? Does he see Span as a key part of the next good Twins team? If not, then he really should deal Span this summer. I don't think Span will ever be more valued on the trade market as now.

Makes sense, doesn't it? They got to trade him before his value falls even further. At least he is healthy.

I like Denard Span a lot. I would have no qualms with him remaining in the Twins OF for years to come. If they can find a good deal for Revere or Benson and keep Span, I'm fine with that. But the harsh reality is that the Twins do have more OF prospects than anything else and they need pitching desperately, so Span seems like the best bargaining chip they have. I just hope they don't give him away for a handful of magic beans that never lead to anything.
