It's going to be interesting to see what happens with Appel. He's rolling the dice big time, gambling that he'll have the kind of season that will move him up considerably from his #8 spot in the first round this year. I thought he was crazy when he passed on the Pirates and I still think it has very little chance of turning out to be a wise move. So many stars have to align to cause him to move up and any of a bunch of things could go wrong and move him down. Even if he has a good year, he's lost most of his bargaining leverage. If I were the team drafting him, I'm not sure I'd even offer slot at this point. What's he going to do? Play indy ball?

I guess I wasn't thinking about how old Herrmann was for a AA player. But you're right, even if a HS catcher was on the Joe Mauer path, Herrmann would still be almost 30, and Joe Mauer will still be playing out his contract at 34...

Good post, Eric. I do not think it's too early to think about the 2013 draft. It's basically the fans' only reward for watching a second consecutive season of dreadful Twins baseball. Appeal or Martinez could be really exciting players!

Also, keep in mind that if the Twins did draft a guy like Martinez, Chris Herrmann (will turn 25 in November) might be 30-31 or so years old by the time that Martinez (or any HS catcher) was MLB ready.
