Jim,

I hate to tell you "I told you so." I knew this was going to happen and the Twins front office should be embarrassed by the outright lies they told season ticket holders back in September. I believe Bill Smith was fired because he wanted to spend more money than the Twins ever imagined. As usual this organization is never about winning but entirely about profit. Jim Pohlad is a real life Ebeneezer Scrooge and folks GM Terry Ryan knows this pitching staff is even worse than last year. I am holding out hope for Brett Myers and Brent Lillabridge. If they signed these two guys it would make me feel a little better about losing 95 games again.

The Twins don't owe Nishioka for this year, but they did for last season. That was what I was referring to... as one possible reason why Waters referred to the Twins opening 2012 with a $94 million payroll, instead of the $100 million they actually owed, in total, on Opening Day.

I disagree wholeheartedly that five of the guys you mentioned would likely be even "decent" as a rotation in 2014-15. I don't like the Correia signing, but there's no doubt in my mind they did... and still do... need a real pitcher added to both this season and future rotations. And obviously they can afford it.

<i>"The only thing I can assume is that Charley is not counting the $3 million owed to Tsuyoshi Nishioka "</i>

They don't owe Nishioka anything. He nullified the contract to achieve his release.

That said. I really would rather see the Twins at $50 million payroll that makes sense rather than keeping up with an imaginary line in the sand and signing the likes of Correia this season and Capps last season to 3-4 times actual value contracts.

I'd probably add Haren in your list of players and I suspect that he signed a split contract (no details leaked) and would be making at least a couple mil. Haren, Diamond and Pelfrey might not be ready for opening day, so you got to add a couple more 500K to balance the equation. I got this gut feeling that they will sign wife beater Myers to a 2+ year deal with too much money.

I don't get it. Five of: Gibson, Meyer, May, Hendriks, Worley, Diamond, Wimmers, Hermsen could have been a decent rotation in 2014 and 2015. Now Correia is the 2014 Blackburn and they are getting another one. And more of the kids will be ready in 2015...

No long term plan. Jerky reactionary tactics.

Ryan should go the Rantz way.
