The Twins have struggled mightily on the road recently, but thanks to Kyle Gibson, they were able to snap the road losing skid at 10 games before coming home to drop two of three to the Kansas City Royals. This week we take a look at what’s been going wrong for the Twins and what it means for the franchise going into the All-Star break.

Joe Mauer is on the DL, Brian Dozier is slumping, and Josh Willingham can’t seem to find a hit to save his life (or the team). We were lucky enough to have a full booth of podcasters tonight, and the gang gave out mid-season awards for both the American and National Leagues.

This week’s show features a good deal of disagreement amongst the four of us, so be sure to let us know who you think was right and who was wrong by sending us tweets or emails. We also used some “adult language” so this show may not be suitable for young children or sensitive old people.

Enjoy the show.

This week we spend time talking about the series of roster moves and player swaps that lead to Jorge Polanco being called up from High-A Fort Myers to the Big League club. We talk about Byron Buxton‘s rehab, Kendrys Morales finally hitting a home run for the Twins, and the Twins’ struggles on the road. We go Down on the pond and talk about Pat Kelly (Cody and Jay interviewed Pat but the audio did not come through clearly, so we have a write up on that interview coming soon) and what he’s been doing since he was drafted in the 12th round of the 2014 draft.

We talk beer, baseball, and we take some questions for the listeners.

Thanks for sticking around!

GameChat – White Sox @ Twins #2, 7:10pm

ok, it’s finally not raining in Minnesota!!! This is especially joyous for me as the carpet from my two basement bedrooms are currently laid out in my driveway hopefully drying enough to continue to be used as temporary floor covering until we decide what the permanent replacement will be. Oh yeah and everything else that was in those two rooms in now removed and piled elsewhere while we attempt to dry out..  Just so much water in this state right now.

All that being said, it’s a hot but beautiful day for baseball in Minnesota. Let’s see if the boys can make use of that hot, humid air to let some long balls carry a ways!

Man, Glen Perkins owes the team a steak dinner… They pulled his butt out of an ignominious post-game lockerroom walk of shame.

beerchoiceThat being said, game long highlight player was really Kurt Suzuki! wow, did he ever perform – great defense and great hit leadership! That absolutely perfect pickoff to 2B was a thing of beauty for defense-lovers. For that, the beer is on us! Whatever you want.

Escobar also provided some hefty help to this team with timely RBI but the MOST timely RBI, of course, is the walk-off hit from Brian Dozier. After the 2 run lead melted away during Perkins’ 9th inning meltdown, it was hard to keep the optimism up but out came the Bull Dozier to pull it all back together in what has become a very consistent level of performance from him which should absolutely get him an All Star game slot. But for the more local honorifics, we just call BOD!

Another night where I don’t get to watch baseball.. I’ll be trying to catch scores and updates and plays during breaks and car rides.. wish I could enjoy the game since they didn’t do so well for the day I got to watch yesterday.. but I’ll take a win regardless tonight!

Not having seen or heard the game, I’m going to simply give the BOD award to Brian Dozier for his first inning two-run home run, but four pitchers combining for a shutout of the Jays certainly warrants honorable mention! – JC

it’s getting kind of sad that I never get to watch baseball lately – I get teased by the nightly lineups and never getting to see what they can do until I get to check the boxscores later..

Perk made it a little bit dramatic there in the ninth, but got the door closed with a 3-pitch whiff of Go-Go.

It’s really nice to see Hammer be The Hammer again, isn’t it? But Brian Dozier went yard, too, and he also was 3 for 3 on the night. That makes him our BOD. – JC

Episode 84: The Twins are Above Five Hundred and Fox Sports’ Gabe Kapler

The Twins are TWO GAMES ABOVE FIVE HUNDRED! That must mean that Gardy is a magician, I don’t know how else to explain in.  You can download the new Talk to Contact (@TalkToContact) episode via iTunes or click here you can download the new episode, and if you want to add the show to your non-iTunes podcast player, this is the RSS Feed.

Gabe Kapler, Fox Sports Live

Gabe Kapler, Fox Sports Live

This week we discuss the Twins shift to six-man rotations in Cedar Rapids and Fort Myers, Dozier’s chances of being a 40/40 guy (and a related tangent about Jose Canseco in 1988), what the Twins will do when Mike Pelfrey, Oswaldo Arcia, and Josh Willingham are healthy, and a change in the Twins’ mentality.

We pick a pitcher and hitter of the week, and talk about Minor Leaguer Zack Granite when we go down on the pond.

This week we were lucky to be joined by Fox Sports One’s Gabe Kapler.  Kap, as he is affectionately known, is a 12 year MLB veteran, and hosts a couple of shows on FS1, including Fox Sports Live and MLB Whip Around.  He talks about his path to the majors, and weighs in on batter perparation and making adjustments to pitchers, a couple of topics very close at hand for Twins Aaron Hicks and Chris Colabello.

We ran long on Twins news this week, so we had to cut the Beer and Around the League segments, but do not fret, we will be back next week at full strength.

Thanks for listening!

GameChat – Mariners @ Twins #2, 6:10pm

Ok, Seattle is getting some seriously lucky and beautiful baseball weather. I wish I could be at Target Field right now – or tomorrow. But I’m not even going to be able to see the game (choir concert) so I need you guys to cheer them for me.

Much like opposing batters, I never really know what to expect from a Deduno start.. let’s hope it’s moving all over every where – just always within Pinto’s grasp.

“I love winning man….I love winning it’s like…..better than losing.”

Nuke LaLoosh got that right, didn’t he?

It’s not like the Twins did a whole lot of stuff right in this game. Just 6 hits. Some iffy set-up relief pitching. But they WON and that puts them above .500 at the latest point in the season since 2010 (that’s the last time the Twins were actually, you know… good).

Sam Deduno did well. Threw a lot of pitches early, but that wasn’t 100% his fault and he made up for it with a very quick 5th inning.

But Brian Dozier won this thing with a 3-run HR in to the flower pots in right field in the 5th inning and for that, he gets his second straight BOD. In fact, I think I’ll use the same picture of Dozier that I used yesterday and I’ll keep using it as long as he keeps winning games with home runs (not that I’m superstitious or anything, but you don’t mess with a winning streak, right?) – JC

I have to be honest, I’m not sure I could name 5 guys on the Mariners’ roster this year without looking at their posted line up.

Fortunately, I have that line up right here.

Saunders, M, RF Mauer, 1B
Cano, 2B Plouffe, 3B
Hart, DH Parmelee, RF

Ackley, LF Pinto, DH
Zunino, C Hicks, CF
Miller, B, SS Escobar, E, SS
  Young, Cr, P   Gibson, P

Seattle 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 3 0 4 9 1
Minnesota 0 0 2 1 1 1 0 0 x 5 12 0

I didn’t get to listen to a lot of the game, but it sure seemed like a good, solid team effort.

Kyle Gibson worked a very nice seven innings. Glen Perkins closed with a nicely un-dramatic ninth inning.

Six different hitters had doubles, two had home runs. One guy, Brian Dozier, had one of each so he gets our BOD award. – JC

GameChat – Orioles @ Twins #2, 1:10

Wow, if you live in MN and have been tolerating the weather this week, today is GORGEOUS!! The sun is out and the 50’s are so much better than it was… Since Nolasco did help out the bullpen last night, we should be set to take this to the birds but some actual offense would help a lot.

Minnesota 1 0 1 0 1 0 3 0 x 6 12 0

Not only was the weather a VAST improvement over the previous week but a win is too!! Correia just kept going out each inning.. having a discussion with Andy at the end of each one but then going out for the next until he’d completed 7. Again, that makes for a nice continued break for the over-worked bullpen. I like that. Kudos and pastries for our starter today! The tough part is coming up with a BOD today… I still battle back and forth. My gut says Dozier but the numbers say Mauer.. since I have no one to discuss it with at this point, I’m just going with both!
