TwinsCentric Viewing Party

(courtesy of the StarTribune)

If you would like to talk about Joe Mauer and any other Twins-related topics, please join the TwinsCentric Guys at Majors  Sports Café in Apple Valley TODAY (March 13th) during the Twins/Phillies spring training game (noon until To Be Determined). All four TwinsCentric members will be there. There will be drink and appetizer specials for those there for the Viewing Party. There will also be several drawings for prizes, including copies of the Twins 2010 Annual, the SethSpeaks.net Minnesota Twins 2010 Prospect Handbook, and even tickets to Twins games at Target Field. So, if you can make it, be sure to stop by and talk Twins with a bunch of Twins fans!

Followup:  Wow, it was a great time!  Fabulous turnout and lots of fun – even got to get most of the TwinsCentric guys’ autographs on my MN Twins Annual!  We’ll definitely share all the info whenever they choose to do this again!

Trading Joe Mauer… and other nonsense.

See, this is what happens when you give writers too much free time and too little real news to talk about. They start thinking. And, as Crash Davis told Nuke LaLoosh in the best baseball movie ever, “Don’t think. You’ll only hurt the ballclub.”

So a Strib columnist had nothing better to do this week than write a column hinting that (a) the Twins’ inability to sign Mauer at this point means there may be some sort of impasse in the negotiations, and (b) that such impasse means that Bill Smith will consider trading Mauer.

Now, personally, I think it’s possible that the whole column was intended to send a message to Smith and Mauer’s agent. Specifically, “We’re tired of nobody telling us what’s going on so until someone starts talking, we’re going to start making crap up!”

There’s been no indication from anyone anywhere (that I’ve heard or read) that the negotiations are in trouble. These folks are talking about paying one player amounts of money that come pretty close to what the Marlins have been paying to their entire team lately… and committing to do it for several years in the future. It should come as no surprise to anyone that it’s taking a bit longer than your run-of-the-mill contract negotiation.

Of course, if the first point did have any basis in fact, it would be hard to argue the second point. Obviously, IF the Twins were at the point where it was looking unlikely that they were going to be able to reach agreement with Mauer and his agent, then absolutely, they have to trade him. It could be argued that the Twins should have let Johan play out his final year and take the two draft picks they’d have received in compensation, rather than trade him for the mediocre (and that’s being generous, the way things worked out) return they got from the Mets. But Joe Mauer is in a whole different category from Santana.

Which brings me to the part of the original columnist’s article that I can’t laugh off… the part that makes you wonder if this guy pays any attention to Major League Baseball whatsoever.

Having dragged his audience to the conclusion that the Twins may not sign Mauer and thus may need to trade him, he proposes that the Twins trade him for… a relief pitcher.

Seriously? They should consider trading arguably the best player in the game, who’s likely entering his prime productive years, for bullpen help? Did he not see what the Jays got for Roy Halladay (Travis d’Arnaud, Kyle Drabek and Brett Wallace) or, in a more accurate comparison, what the Rangers got for Mark Tiexiera (they got Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Elvis Andrus, Neftali Perez, Matt Harrison, and Beau Jones from the Braves)? And the Twins should get who, for Mauer… Heath Bell?

Now, I realize that Bill Smith’s track record with Twins fans and the local media when it comes to making trades is not real positive. The Delmon Young trade and the Santana trade would hardly be considered “wins” for the organization at this point. But if Bill Smith traded Joe Mauer for a package of players headlined by a relief pitcher, he’d go down in baseball history as the biggest bonehead ever to hold a Major League GM title (and this is a club that includes people like Steve Phillips and Hawk Harrelson!).

It appears that Mauer and his agent have most of the negotiating power right now so if you’re Bill Smith and want to send the message that nobody is irreplaceable, that’s fine. Call the Yankees and ask them what they’d offer for Mauer. Given the direct pipeline the New York writers have to the Yankees Owners’ suite, that story will take all of 30 seconds to be published on the web. That would be “message sent” and you won’t have violated the agreement you’ve made with Mauer and his agent not to talk to the media about the negotiations.

But until we read something along those lines, my suggestion is, “chill”… and if you read or hear something that sounds like nonsense, consider the source because that’s probably exactly what it is.

If Mauer wants to be a Twin for the rest of his career, he will be offered enough money to make sure he can do so and live in a manner that the rest of us can only dream of. But if it turns out that all the talk about how money isn’t the most important thing, how he’s more concerned about the Twins being committed to winning, etc., is all just PR garbage, the Twins and their fans will survive fine without him.

Unless, of course, Smith is as big a bonehead as any person suggesting he be traded for a relief pitcher.

WE’RE NUMBER… um… 64?

So I was making my daily rounds of my favorite Twins blogs on Wednesday when I noticed Seth Stohs’ had posted an “I like this Top 10 list!” entry. Seth linked to Bob Ingrassia’s “newsbobber” site where Bob had posted the Top 10 Minnesota Twins blogs list.

Now, let me just say, I had no illusions that our brand spanking new “Knuckleballs” blog would have cracked the “top 10″… or even the top 20… or 30. We were well aware that there’s a boat load of Twins blogs out there when we started this blogging adventure.

But newsbobber doesn’t stop at the “top 10”. Nooooo… it lists 63 Twins blogs! None of them “Knuckleballs”! This means that we are… at BEST… the 64th most popular Twins blog!

Of course, we’ve only been up and running for about a week, so we can use that as an excuse for our poor showing (or non-showing, in this case). But I don’t accept excuses from Gardy or any of the Twins and I won’t accept it from us, either. We can do better… we must do better… we WILL do better! (But then, it would be tough to do worse than “not listed”.)

Newsbobber ranks the blogs by “Newsbobber Score”. I admit I didn’t dig in to how that score is determined, but somehow we need to figure out how to get one!

Oh, I would also point out that Bob invites people to let him know if you, “Don’t see one of your favorites.” (Hint hint.) Yes, I realize it may be way too soon for any of you to consider Knuckleballs to be, “one of your favorites.” But, I promise, you won’t go to hell for telling Bob a little white lie and helping us out in the process.

Just for the record, I was pleased to see almost all of the blogs on our “Additional Twins Blogs” list ranked highly on the list and congratulate Aaron Gleeman on his perch at the top (though I wonder how he feels about being referred to as the “grandpappy of Twins bloggers”).

Seriously, I had no idea there were that many Twins blogs out there. Obviously, there are a lot of them I’ll be checking out for the first time, very soon. That should be time consuming enough to keep me from doing anything remotely productive for a while. – JC

Speaking of Baseball Boyfriends

While Babs is trying to sort out what to do if her baseball boyfriend ends up on the DL, I’m sitting here wondering if I’ll ever be able to choose another Twins boyfriend at all.

I’ve had two BFs in the past, and both ended with the players being traded. It’s sort of interesting that both are pitchers because I don’t necessarily consider myself to have a favorite position or anything, but there it is.

While some girls may have practically a harem of BFs, backup BFs, and flirt buddies, I’ve always been pretty monogamous about the whole thing. I don’t really remember now how I pinned by BF sights on Eric Milton, but I’m guessing his no-hitter back in ’99 didn’t hurt. I finally bought my first Twins jersey in 2003 with Milton’s name on it, and he was traded after that season. *sigh*

[Milton was before I had a digital camera. Considering how long it’s been since I got my first one, wow, it’s been a long time since he left. If I scrounge up a non-digital photo I’ll scan and add it.]

One problem I have with choosing a Twins BF is that I don’t really like to share, at least not with those I attend games with or talk baseball with ever, which might explain my fling the next couple of seasons with J.C. Romero. He seemed to be someone others loved to hate, so I pretty much had him to myself. I didn’t get as far as buying a jersey with his name on it, but I probably would have if he hadn’t been traded after the 2005 season.

romero071905-3

Wait — it’s been four years since Juan Carlos (that’s what I called him in my head) was traded? I’ve really lost track of the time while trying to figure out who would make a good new BF.

The first place one might look is who my former BFs were traded for. Milton: Carlos Silva (now with the Cubs), Bobby Korecky (now with the Diamondbacks) and Nick Punto. Huh. It feels like Punto’s been around longer than that. He isn’t BF material for me, but I can’t imagine the Twins without him right now.

Romero: Alexi Casilla. I love watching Casilla play, but also just not quite right for my baseball BF.

So I’m back to the rest of the guys. I’ve been perusing the 40-man roster and no jumps out at me at all. I like so many of them, but either they’re not a good fit for me or they’ve been claimed by someone else.

Maybe the problem is that I really need to be able to see these guys out in the sun or something before I’ll find one who makes my heart sing. I know I saw many of them in a new light when I attended an away game in Anaheim a few years ago, so maybe the new ballpark is what I really need.

Rather than studying the roster maybe what I really should be doing is figuring out if I’m going to be able to buy tickets for a game or two when the single-game tickets go on sale this Saturday.

So, who makes your heart go pitter pat?

Joe Nathan might go on the DL!!

Man, a girl can take it pretty hard when her baseball BF has what looks like it might be a season ending injury.  I’m pretty darn loyal in my love of my favorite baseball players but even I have to look at my team and try to picture what this season might look like without Joe Nathan.

For me this is just not a question that stats alone can answer.  Twitchy fills a very special role with this team that can’t be filled by whoever is in the room.  I think for some, it’s easier to look outside our little team family for backup possibilities because they feel like they already know everyone on the team and they would require a lot of investment to get them ready to fill the role.  I’m in the group that sees SO many options available to us internally, that I couldn’t even DREAM of looking outside the players we already have.

I certainly have the highest hopes that Joe Nathan will be back with us, giving me the shivers, and delivering nasty fastballs and filthy sliders.  I just LOVE me a dirty pitcher!  But every role should have a backup so here’s what I consider my top 3 backup options to be:

1) Sideshow, ie Pat Neshek, has LONG been a favorite of mine.  It started out of pure entertainment value and then I realized how devastating he could be to opposing batters and my love deepened.  Do I think he has the ability?  yes.  Do I think he’s ready to step into that role?  I’m not sure.  I don’t think he’s had the pressure of that kind of attention before and it would would require some adaptation not to mention the job can be exhausting.

2) Shaggy, ie. Matty Guerrier, is DEFINITELY a possibility and one I honestly had never really considered for this kind of role in the past.  He’s done a very good job for this team but somehow he’s always been in the shadow of more spectacular players and has done well in whatever role assigned but never shined.  This could be his opportunity to take the spotlight and I think it’s my job to take another look!

3)  Blacky, ie Nick Blackburn, is probably the most obvious of my choices simply because he’s been making me drool ever since his first late season callup when he got SHELLED but took one for the team and stayed out with more composure than I could have imagined possible for a rookie pitcher.  Now that he’s with the team full time, he’s put together seasons that surprised everyone with how solid he could be – even some applying the term “ACE” far too liberally (IMHO) last year – and has been at the core of a young but dependable starting rotation.

What do you mean he’s not a relief pitcher???  well, duh!  OH WAIT?!  You thought I was talking about who would be the new CLOSER??!?!?!?!  oh good grief, no.

I meant who is my backup BF if Nathan has to be away from us for awhile!  I’ll leave assigning the closer responsibilities to the team staff.  They most certainly have a lot to choose from and I look forward to the season.  I still hope we get to see Nathan making opposing pitchers look ridiculous but if not, we have great guys out there willing to step up.

OUTRAGE! Twins go TOO far with inhumane promotion!

Hi Knuckleballs… JimCrikket here… and I’m outraged at what I’ve seen about a new promotion the Twins have announced!

I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes. I looked at the headline once. Then looked again. It couldn’t be true. How could they possibly think this would be accepted by the public?!

But there it was… in a bold headline right on the Twins’ website. “Twins to Sell Four Types of Dogs at Target”

Now I’m not a member of PETA, but I really think that organization needs to step in before this promotion gets established.

Can you just imagine these four types of dogs being sold to just any old drunken Twins fan who decides during the 7th inning stretch that they want a new dog? Where’s the background check? How do we know they’ll be going to good homes?

Will Twins be selling this poor basset at Target Field?
Will Twins sell him to Cruella DeVil?
Don't let the Twins sell dachshunds to drunks!
Say "No!" to Twins' plan to sell him to visiting BitchSox fans!

Rise up, fellow animal loving Twins fans! Speak up now! Tell the Twins they can’t go forward with this ill-conceived and inhumane promotion! With your help, we can stop this outrageous idea before it starts! – JC

[UPDATE from CapitalBabs] Um… JC… did you READ the article? The Twins are introducing four new types of HOT DOGS that will be for sale in Target Field.

[UPDATE from JC] Oh… well that’s a different matter altogether. I like hot dogs, especially at a baseball game!

Never mind.

So what would you like?

Hey Knuckleballs!

Obviously, being a new blog, we still have some things we have ‘in process’ and have some big ideas for fun features we want to have going for the start of the regular season.  That is pretty much our arbitrary date selection for when we want to have everything functioning for when people are paying more attention…  Welcome, officially, to the beta period and don’t you feel lucky to be a part?!

GameChats are going well – a huge thing for us and one of our major hurdles in getting setup – but if you would like to participate in live chat during games, what kind of information would you like to have handy?  We would love some feedback from the users.  Would you like to have final Boxscores posted for each of the game posts?  I’m sure that game summaries, however creative and/or involving legos or some other childish excuse for fun, will be a part of our regular season lineup.  What’s the first thing you look for to find out what happened??

We are also discussing various ideas for games/entertainment/time wasters to provide here and there just aleve the tediousness of days without baseball – and even some with.  If you have suggestions – or even contributions – we would love to chat with you.

Another feature we would like to provide is Guest Submissions!  We would love to have game journals for all of your fun at Spring Training or that roadtrip to Rochester or family day at Midway Stadium!!  Minor leagues, Independent Leagues, Major Leagues – it’s all good for us.  Contact us if you would like to be a part or if you have a trip in mind.

Photos!!!!  We’re all three a little camera crazy so it’s kind of surprising that we haven’t quite gotten to getting pictures up yet.  We’ll probably have LOTS of pictures to provide and if you have things in particular that you would like to see and/or would like to share, let us know!

So all you Spring Training Beta testers, give us some feedback of things you always wanted to have but haven’t found yet…
